Monday Survived
Well after being off for a week: I've made a first pass at my e-mail, completed two help desks, help with a server fire drill, and moved my new notebook over to my desk. I can say that Dell's 2408WFP monitor is very nice. I haven't gotten to take a drive on the notebook yet, but it should be quite nice. My week off yielded a 30% success on my less-than-ambitious to-do list, so it's the nose to the grindstone now.

I'm ready for my week off, my to-do list is really starting to bug me.
There are so many fun things that I want to do, that only a week off (not traveling) will begin to make a dent in it. I am going to have to plan my time off and budget time for things. Otherwise, I will probably squander an opportunity to get a few things done. First on the list, I have two websites that need some attention. I need to work on my list too...

Shrink the Federal Government
I reject, as a matter of primary principle, any solution to any problem that grows the size, financial requirements, or function of the Federal Government. The inane Kobayashi Maru morality quips like "No one should die because she cannot afford health care, and no one should go broke because she gets sick. If you agree, please post this as your status for the next 24 hours" will not go unchallenged if I see them. If the government can't afford her health care, she dies. What do you do then? Call the UN? HA!
The Christians and Buddhists have an interesting solution to this dilemma, that doesn't involve further enslavement to the Great Government Bureaucracy. Having the services of the government be the determining factor of how our society is considered just or compassionate demonstrates a fallacy of understanding that I cannot tolerate.
Furthermore, I will argue with anyone who considers my political opinion wrong. I am entitled to have it, speak my mind, and convince others to accept my viewpoint. This country was founded on the free exchange of ideas from groups of people who did not agree. Arguing challenges the issue or solution to be the best it can be. If all the problems are made know, we will be better for it. The great political debate is what sets us apart from China, Cuba, Iran, or North Korea. As pointless as you might think the political bickering is, it most certainly has a point. Especially if you can agree to disagree.
And I reject the notion that "we have to do something". No, we do not. I would rather take the status quo, over increasing government interference in my life. Socialism is wrong, and I know this to be true. If I call someone a socialist, I see them as a threat to my freedom, politically and economically. I do not see Europe as a more evolved, smarter, or more cultured example of what society should be like.

Looking forward to upgrading to Snow Leopard
I just got my copy of Snow Leopard!!! Thank you Apple and Federal Express. A bargain at $29, the wipe and reload on the Mac Platform is as smooth as it gets. Tonight, after the kids are in bed, I'll get started so I can be ready for the game Sunday.

I've got my copy of Snow Leopard now, thank you Apple and FexEx. Tonight is the wipe and reload of my MacBook, after the kids are in bed. I am really looking forward to this, migrating between Mac installs is one of the smoothest processes I've seen. I need to have it ready for the game Sunday.
Day 3 of trying to install the Visual Studio 2010 Beta.
Really, the downloader app should be able to handle this, but it gets lost at step 7/24 and can't download the rest. Trying to download the ISO fails around 300MB into the download. If Microsoft had this via a torrent, even if the ISPs were underhandedly throttling the speed down to 4KB, eventually I would get the image. Maybe I can find a page to request a DVD mailed to me for free.

Glad to be back at work
I'm glad to be back at work. Five days of sleep-deprived gaming madness is enough for me. It took a day to recover and get back in sync with normal time. My inbox was overflowing with mail, and I still have yet to get through it all. Things have been fairly quiet this morning, only a couple of visitors. I hope to get orgainized this afternoon and get ready for the rest of the week. Scott is out this week, so some of his distractions might come my way.

The Adventure Ends
Departing GenCon, with a bag full of goodies. I may sleep the rest of the day. I can't wait to unpack, fun fun fun. Now for the long drive home.

I think I've finally caught up on my sleep. I need to unpack, do laundry, do dishes, make a post office run, organize, and process pictures. Work starts tomorrow, and I'm not quite ready to go back. My to do list has grown, without getting anything done last week. But that's what vacations are all about.

Tried to register for some specific events... all sold out. So I made a second pass at the exhibition floor. Checked off a lot of Fantasy Grounds licenses, Jason will poo poo all over it. Might have to leave him out of the fun. Bought a copy of "The Games" and "Dorkness Rising", so I can punish friends and family with them. Bought a copy of Hero Builder, it supports the Pathfinder rule set and seems quite a bit more polished than PCGen.
Going the eat at the noodle place for lunch in a bit. The prices are cheap, and I am in the mood for some thai-peanuty goodness. And Seth and I can sit on the sidewalk and take pictures of the passersby. Hmm... I need to publish some pictures now...

GenCon Day 0
Seth and I got off to a bit of a late start, but stopping for lunch at a Frish's Big Boy where the statue had been given a pirate makeover was great. Visited Roscoe and Sadie, then went up to see Jack, George, Angie and Mom. Then we made a mad dash to Fry's Electronics were I picked up a spare battery for my Canon SLR and a firewire cable for the camcorder. They had a sale on x233 speed 4GB compact flash cards so I picked up a couple of those too.
Checking into the Marriott when smoothly enough, but much to our dismay, they now charge for Internet access. I think that really sucks for what they charge for the room. However, I figured out how to share my Internet connection while tethered to the iPhone. 3G is like a DSL line in performance, and it rawks. Seth and I ate at the RAM, and now were are in the lobby where we thought the wireless was free. No, read more closely and the lobby is the only wireless. The rooms are cabled Ethernet only. Next year I am buying a 1 month MyFi card from Verizon and putting and end to this douchbaggery.
Time to pick events to visit tomorrow. First order of business is getting Pathfinder rule books.

My beef with AT&T wireless:
1- Services hours are crap, almost as bad as a bank.
2- I get charged the same for a data plan on Edge, that some more fortunate soul on 3G has to pay.
3- There is no 3G coverage in Owensboro, KY. I will also fault the FCC and the Owensboro City/Daviess County government for not facilitating a solution.
4- Charging SMS fees for someone with an unlimited data plan is completely inappropriate.
I am upgrading my iPhone to 3.0, yay. It would be YAY if there was 3.0 to be had...

I've gotten a few of my 'spring time' tasks completed. Tax info has been submitted to a CPA for completion. Spring cleaning is well underway. The kitchen table has been recovered for the purpose of dining.
I've downloaded an application for my MacBook called Scrivener, which is designed for writing. It is rather inexpensive at $39.95. The trial is generous too, the 30 days only count the days you use it. So until you get 30 days of use out of it, the trial continues. This is perfect for my sporadic tinkering.
I bought an iPhone and it is everything I hoped it would be. With the expaned capacity of the iPhone, and it's ability to play video, I've had to upgrade my MacBook drive from 80 to 320GB. The Western Digital Scorpio Black drive is pretty spiffy, 7200rpm with 5400rpm power consumption. The extra space is nice, I might actually have a Windows VM in Parallels along witht the Ubuntu VM. I've set up my AT&T wireless accound and voicemail, I should be all set.
I've installed Ruby and CVS in my Ubuntu VM, I'll have to see what databases it supports natively.
I think a nap is calling me, oh lazy rainy day.

With the big 40 approaching soon, I've come to a few conclusions (in no particular order):
- There is not a journalist on this earth that understands economics any better than I do.
- Reporters that cover politics are bottom-feeders among bottom-feeders.
- Lawyers broke our government.
- Pastrami rawks.
- I want an iPhone.
- Anyone who wanted change and voted for a Democrat (or Republican) made a feckless blunder.
- 'The Media' has lost me. No radio, no TV, and I can barely tolerate some movies. It's just me and my iPod now, so ABC/NBC/CBS can all three kiss my arse.
- The role of the senate was well defined in the Federalist Papers. Especially 63, I think. The election of senators should be returned to state legislatures, of that I am certain.
- I need to start buying and learning how to use and maintain a collection of firearms.
- Islamic/Arabic culture is barbaric thuggery, and I will not accept it nor suffer the need for its existence.
- The southern half of California could wash into the Ocean, and I would not miss it at all.
- Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas seem like places to live.
- I do not accept Global Warming as a crisis, nor will I accept the panic reaction to dubious science.
- It will be nice to see the Northwest Passage again.
- The Chinese Government is Evil. (note the capital E)
- The Iranian, Syrian, and North Korean governments are evil.
- The Russian, French, and many African governments are selfish.
- Ice cream makes me happy.
- Diet Pepsi is the nastiest liquid offered as a beverage.
- Sushi is yummy good.
- Children are the joy of the world.
- I miss my hammock.
- I need to retire soon so I can work on my personal projects.
- I get by with a little help from my friends.

Economics 101: for those of you who didn't learn it in the course of your public education, college, or have the benefit of someone with the knowledge in your family to teach you.
I really get tired of making the argument on who really pays corporate taxes. WE DO, the consumer. Taxes are in the 'cost of doing business' side of the books. Guess what? Really... If you raise taxes, especially to the punitive levels some of the fecktards in Washington desire, every company in the country is going to have to raise their prices. And we will pay it, because "we" wanted it by voting in a bunch of socialist dimwits. That's how it works, so don't be stoopid and argue it otherwise.

November 2008: The end of reason
I'm not going to go into the discussion about "its the government's responsibility to...", that is a political opinion and there is no correct answer. I hear the most malformed reasoning leading into peoples voting habits, and I have resigned to merely point out facts on how things work and what people do, not what they say. There were a lot of words tossed around before November, some of them being not so well thought out.
Sara Palin has more public service experience than Barak Obama. But they weren't running for the same office, were they. The Republicans ran moderate and lost. That happens every time they do it, and they seem to forget it. Personally, I like John McCain but I don't like his politics. Obama was a liberal lawyer, and had done nothing to stir controversy in his political move, except perhaps having the worst voting and attendance record in the senate. He was a paper candidate foisted up by billionaire Democrats and the media orgy. CNN and NPR both lost my patronage with their loss of sensibilities in this election.
The Libertarian Party was deliberately kept off the the ballot in a few states, so they had to fight it out in the courts. I donated money to the Libertarian cause, and voted for Bob Barr. Why? Because REAL CHANGE does not come from Democrats or Republicans. They are the parties in power.
Democrats in Congress have a lower approval rating than President George Bush. Why did more Democrats get elected then? Stupidity. George Bush's biggest mistake was straying from core conservative values, and not taking the Democrats to mat on several issues. The medicare prescription drug benefit was a complete sellout, and abandonment of being fiscally responsible.

Thoughts on the war in Iraq.
The press, going into the war got it all wrong. Their dates were off by an order of magnitude, and painted such a doom and gloom scenario, I wondered if they had any faith in our military at all. Three guys sitting around a lunch table, with a better-than-average understanding of history, got it right. Exactly right. And guess what... according to those same predictions we will be in Iraq for several more years. Why? Islamic culture has fallen into medieval thuggery, and it will take a great deal of time to bring them into the modern era.
We got the intelligence wrong, and so did every other government participating in the various UN monitoring activities. I don't think the endless, nagging discussion on any alleged alterations of the intelligence data is productive at this point. Most of the insiders from the administration who are reporting this have made and are making a lot of money from book and movie deals. This is, of course, the media rewarding opinions that it likes and that advance its agendas.
Saddam needed killing. He was an evil man, and I don't want to hear any blathering about it. He was working on weapons of mass destruction. He had used chemical weapons in the past. His sons were even more sickly twisted monsters.
Iraq was not involved in 911. That is Bullshit. There were medical records of Taliban from Afghanistan being treated in hospitals. Saddam was funneling money to them, as well as goods and services paid for by the UN-oil-for-food fiasco.
The UN is useless. Especially went soooo many countries are run by dictators. The real humor is when these same dictators use the 'democratic' UN for their self-serving douchebaggery. If a dictator from a tiny country can make a sham out of the UN, why do we treat it like the greatest evolutionary step of mankind? Stoopid.
I refuse to accept, on equal terms, a culture who treats women and children as property, uses violence to promote internal political control, and is not willing to tolerate social differences. Arab culture is the most zealotrous, hateful, and intolerant of any society today.

The problem in today's scenario is that islamic militants operate like criminals, and function openly in some countries. If there is a haven for these monsters, it must be eliminated. I want to live free, and I want to live in a country where I don't have to worry about bombs going off in schools, public areas, or busses. If this means we have to fight the fight in someone else's backyard, so be it.

Life without the media... almost.
I have been without radio for a while now. My iPod has been used more now than ever. I've got two dozen, mostly technology, podcasts to which I've subscribed. The only political exposure now is the 10 minute segment I catch on the radio while I shower, and the water-cooler conversations at work. I think Obama is a paper candidate propped up by the ultra-rich democrats, and just another smooth-talking lawyer. McCain is probably a nicer guy, but I don't like his politics either. "Bob Barr for President!", I say.

Hmmm... What did I do on the 4th of July?
I slept until 3pm, and apparently I left my cell out in the truck. So after checking in with the voice mail, I took care of the Oglesby's hermit crab, went shopping for food, and drove out to the suburbs of the greater metropolitan area of Ohio county.
Food, Fireworks, and Friends. I had a good time, got back around 1:30am, chatted for a couple of hours and then finally ZZZzzz...

My immersion into podcasts is already flooding me with interesting idea, tips, and topics to pursue. Yesterday and today I was focused on the culture around "GTD", or Getting Things Done. Listening to his history and the evolution of Smalltalk really took me back to the 'golden years' of personal computing.

I am on day three of "little to no radio". I have filled that space with podcasts, my iPod is loaded with nothing but podcasts. I really feel that my time is better spend listening to the programs that I choose, rather than listening to NPR prattle on with the "we-love-obama" orgy. I like McCain personally, but I don't agree with is politics. The Obama-lama-rama coverate, his speeches and his fans annoy me to no end. Obama is a paper tiger, a liberal stool, elevated by the ultra-rich liberal Democrats. He is just another lawyer and has as much depth as a sheet of paper. Surrounded by nut-jobs, he has not done anything even close being noteworthy. Why the press is so facinated with him and his so-called phenomenon, is beyond my ability to tolerate. If I donate to public radio, I am complaining about NPR and I no longer support thier efforts. Not a dime from me. Terry Gross and Fresh Air are already on my list of things that suck. It is a good thing that our local talk radio has Dennis Miller on in the same time slot.
I am activly eliminating every bit of traditional media from my life. They are mostly a waste of time. No TV, no news on the radio. Certain sources on the Internet will be my sole actively monitered new source. Piss-off ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, New York, LA and Hollywood.

I spent quite a bit of time getting organized at work. With the IBM Lotus Domino wrap-up, there are lots of loose threads to chase. Scott is on vacation this week, and Markus is in his last week of Metrology hell. Its really difficult to get anything other than the day-to-day stuff done with two people out.
Sophie and Lucy's dance recital was postponed (canceled) until they can resolve the issue of finding a place to host the event. I think the fine school system of Daviess County Kentucky needs to get their collective heads out of their collective butts. But that is just me. OK, its not just me but I'll leave it at that.
I'm done watching the machine run, I think it is time to wander home and listen to my new podcast only iPod setup.

It seems that my blogging experience and/or practices revolve around moments of introspection. My lack of routine helps maintaining the 'empty mind' state, but impedes my ability to focus will and motivation at a particular task.
This realization has caused me to move my Zen calendar to my desk and work and I will try to quote from it each day. That is a small step to a larger goal.

The Evils of Popular Politics
The entire system of re-electing politicians entrenches the existence of the federal government. There are few people who would like to see the "big" government taken apart and passed back down to the states. Outsource the huge "entitlement" programs to private businesses, then let state and county governments buy those administrative/insurance coverage programs.
The federal government can do very little to our fair nations economy to spur it upward. It can do a great deal to squash it. The housing market crash is not a national problem. It is about banks making stupid loans to people who didn't have enought sense to say no. They are the ones that should pay for their mistakes, not all of us. It was not a natural disaster or something out of thier control. It was and act of bad judgement, and for that the lesson needs to be learned. The Government to the Rescue will not fix anything.
As for candidates, I think I've narrowed it down to liking Fred Thompson or Ron Paul. Though not a perfect fit, they are close. Neither Mit Romney or John McCain give me a warm fuzzy and will probably leave me voting Libertarian in 2008

I have so many scraps of paper that need to be translated into posts. *sigh* There is simply not enough time.
Today I dropped a PC on my big toe at work. It hurt. It still hurts. There is no broken skin, but if it doesn't feel better by tomorrow, I may have broken a toe. Otherwise, work was fairly productive today.
I started working on Sophie's and Lucy's PCs tonight. I need to by two small desks, and a bed. I've got a table full of paperwork that still needs to be processed. *bleh*
Jason came over tonight and we went to Starbucks. For the record, T-mobile sucks for charging for WiFi. I hope the county-wide WiFi project ends that douchebaggery. Panera Bread and Beef O'Brady's are free WiFi spots. I'm not sure about Books-a-Million, but Jason and I will find out soon.
It's after my bedtime now. Time to sleep.

Making Time
So far the first two weeks of this year have slipped by me. But I did well today to change direction. I keep a calorie point tally for my food today, and I hit the treadmill for 60 minutes. I had my iPod in the car, but I didn't want to go back outside for it.
I need to write here, a bit every day, to keep on top of things. The process should help me keep focused on my goals. There are many things for which I need closure and resolution. At least there are enough things in my reemerging social life to keep me distracted these days.
Well I have bills to pay, chores to do, and I have to be in bed by 11:30 pm (new rule).

There are simply too many things to do. Even with the elimination of TV from my routine, great ideas go unrealized and mundane tasks compete for precious time. Living Without Television
TV is the great thief of time. Most of us watch it passively, accept what comes on, or ignore it and allow it to fill the background of our existence. Our brains have become numb with the paltry offering of the networks catering to the lowest common denominator among us.
I have replaced TV with exercise and radio. I choose to watch movies. And there are a few Internet offerings that are worthwhile. http://dl.tv/ is a carry over from the expatriates of TechTV before it became the caffeinated teenage gamer network, G4. G4 ruined a wonderful network, I could not stomach the transformations of my shows into pale shadows of their former selves. DL.TV takes me back to the good old days.

BellSouth took 18 days to tell me I couldn't have DSL. The phone service had already been set up. I was so mad, I canceled everything. If I have to pay for a cable modem, I am better off getting a cell phone and ditching the land line. BellSouth has sent me a bill, I am going to have to write my reply since calling them will cost me money. I will object to paying the installation fee, since my order was never fulfilled.
I've lost about 45 pounds since January 1st. I'm lifting twice the weight I started with at the beginning. Physically, I feel better that I can remember. I still need a better routine, idle time is my worst enemy right now. And my notebook is acting freaky. I need to do more writing too.
